Kip Hanrahan: Desire Develops An Edge

Kip Hanrahan
Desire Develops An Edge
First I have to thank Stephen for this wonderful Christmas present and second I have to apologize to Jack Bruce, I just didn’t know. From 1983 released on Kip’s own American ClavĂ©, this is an LP and an EP’s worth of unabashed joy in music making. I’ll let you Google the crap out of all the stuff stuffed into this record but it can feel, at times, like you’re listening to a few great radio stations at once. Jack Bruce’s vocals are killer. Crushingly tasty (sorry, I just didn’t know) and the supporting cast Directed by Kip Hanrahan are equally scrumdiliumcious. Latin, jazz, bossa soul to break your heart and free your mind.

I’m nearly certain Stephen bought this record brand spankin new at Other Music even though its an original from 1983 (just goes to show ya). Maybe they have a few left but my guess is you can find it for a song. And you want this record. No, you really want this record.

Happy B Day !
I love all the American Clave releases. Hanrahan tapped into something special, a New York middle of the night jazz meets world meets weirdness thing that remains unique.

Glad you like it! Yeah, when I first heard Kip Hanrahan’s stuff, it really made me happy. Ken said it perfectly.
The sound of those American Clave records is almost exactly what I hope to hear every time I put the needle down on a new, unknown album: A wild and joyous mix of many great musical styles that somehow make such perfect sense. And the recording quality of every American Clave record I’ve heard is excellent.
From what I understand, Hanrahan is still in the area. He’s friendly with the guys at Other Music, and he stopped by one day and dropped off a bunch of new-old-stock LPs. I picked up a few. : )

By the way, I think there are hi-res downloads of old American Clave stuff available at HDtracks.

new old stock American Clave LPs at Other? Finally I can beat Michael to the LP punch!
Anybody going to the New York CD and LP show tomorrow? See me there…Alan at Stereo Exchange hipped me…out of the loop that I am..:)

Vertical’s Currency has been a long time fave. KH has an almost Eicher-like (Manfred of ECM fame, that is) ability to assemble disparate forces for some magical music making!

Hanrahan also produced Astor Piazolla’s masterpiece, Tango Zero Hour, an absolutely beautiful and otherworldly recording.

I’m a huge fan of Mr Hanrahan. Perhaps one of the most pressing questions I have is why isn’t he better known – I’ve just discovered that he released a follow-up to the wondrous Beautiful Scars back in November last year. There’s been almost no coverage online as far as I can see. I’ve long had Desire Develops… on CD, but this vinyl version looks much superior – I love the photography, Hanrahan as almost always face in shadow. I’m tempted to snag it as I’ve been considering featuring something by him on my http://www.hardformat.org website for some time now. Good to hear of other fans, take care.
