Zola Jesus: Valusia

Posted by michael lavorgna in Music, Records

October 12 marks the release date of Zola Jesus’ 12″ EP Valusia on Sacred Bones Records which includes a scrubbed up version of “Sea Talk” originally released in murkier form on Tsar Bomba.

I know it’s going to divide opinion with “hardcore” fans, but personally I much prefer it, it’s grand.
Nika Rosa Danilova

I know I’m enjoying this lighter shade of Nika Rosa Danilova and hearing her voice in purer form. It’s grand.

I’ve been trying to get to Zola Jesus, but I’m on a one-lane road, stuck behind a big truck. Said truck rattles and shudders with the sound of slow Joy Division tunes–or, maybe, Nico with Martin Hannett, living the dream. Each time, it’s the same.

I’ll keep trying to pass, though. Thinking I’ll get around this obstacle and find something I can happily get behind.

    The anxiety of influence?

But seriously, I know what you mean although I don’t have that issue with her. If you have a chance to see her live it may do the trick.

I can’t speak to her struggles with the music of past masters. But I have big ears, and am trying to hear what you hear here

The struggle, such as it is, belongs to me. I don’t usually play an entire side of a record. A couple of songs in, I tend to hear a segue–and move to another record. Just for fun, or to cherrypick favorites. A given song doesn’t lead to the same segue each time, and shouldn’t.

It’s not working that way with Zola. So far.

When I have this kind of difficulty, I put the LP away and try again…later. Months. And my obsessive system for keeping track of iffy records is to put them on the shelf without a ‘protective plastic sleeve’.

How did you come up with the name Valusia?…. Its sounds like the name of the album Voluspa by The Golden Filter released 2 months ago…..little bit of a coincidence….

Hmm. How Nika Rosa Danilova came up with Valusia is an interesting question. And I don’t know the answer for sure but Valusia is “The kingdom furthest to the west of the Thurian continent. It was created and initially ruled by Serpent Men until they were overthrown by their human slaves.” according to Robert E. Howard in his Kull of Atlantis stories (same guy that wrote Conan the Barbarian).

Voluspa, on the other hand, is from Norse mythology and “is the first and best known poem of the Poetic Edda. It tells the story of the creation of the world and its coming end related by a völva addressing Odin.”

A bit more clarity in your comments would be helpful but if what you’re saying is you’d like more inspiration from Zola Jesus, why are you commenting here? Tell her.
